The Submariner's rotating dive bezel and geometric dial markers make its layout easy to recognise. The featured Watchdives and Cronos alternatives offer date or no-date dials with automatic movements in 40 mm cases.

What defines the Rolex Submariner design?

Rolex launched the Submariner in 1953. Its design centres on the job of a dive watch, reading the time and tracking elapsed minutes on a rotating bezel. The geometric markers and bold bezel scale explain why the layout remains recognisable across different colours, brands and decades.

The current steel models pair a black dial with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert and a 300 m water-resistance rating. The Date bracelet also has Rolex's Glidelock extension system. Those details matter because a familiar dial alone does not give an alternative the same materials, bracelet adjustment or water rating.

Which Submariner alternatives have a date or no-date dial?

Rolex added a date version in 1969. Today the 124060 keeps the dial free of a date window, while the 126610LN adds the date at three o'clock under a Cyclops magnifier. Both measure 41 mm. Choose the date if you use it, or the no-date layout if you prefer the uninterrupted dial.

The Watchdives WD5512B gives you a date and magnifier. The Cronos L6015 NH35 configuration has a black no-date dial. Both use automatic movements, so the date display is the first choice between them.

Are Submariner homages 40 mm or 41 mm?

Rolex moved the Submariner to 41 mm in 2020. The current no-date 124060 uses calibre 3230, while the Date 126610LN uses 3235. A listing that calls a 40 mm watch Submariner-style is describing a design family, not necessarily the current watch's dimensions.

The earlier ceramic-bezel Submariner Date 116610LN is 40 mm. Bob's Watches lists its calibre as 3135. It is a useful comparison for the WD5512B's diameter and date layout, but diameter does not tell you how wide the lugs look or how the case sits on your wrist.

Is a 40 mm Submariner homage suitable for a small wrist?

Both featured alternatives list 40 mm diameter. The WD5512B spans 48 mm from lug to lug and lists 11.8 mm thickness. The Cronos spans 47.8 mm and lists 13.5 mm thickness. Neither is a sub-40 mm option.

Their lug spans are close, but the Cronos has the taller case. A 40 mm diameter says little on its own about small-wrist fit, and Rolex does not list thickness or lug to lug to compare.

Do these Submariner homages match the Rolex bezel and water rating?

Watchdives describes the WD5512B bezel as ceramic with 120 clicks. Its water rating is unclear: the listing says 100 m and the dial says 200 m.

Cronos lists 200 m water resistance, against Rolex's 300 m. A familiar dial and bezel say nothing about how the case is built or tested.

Which Submariner alternatives use quartz?

The Watchdives WD5513Q uses VH31 quartz, with seconds motion the maker describes as sweeping. It offers an aluminium bezel insert and a listed 11.7 mm thickness including the crystal. Quartz suits a watch you want to leave unworn without winding it again.

Watchdives listed all WD5513Q options as sold out on 5 October 2026, so it is not in the featured shortlist. Its current options include black, brown and blue dials, but no turquoise textured dial. The WD5513Q also differs from the automatic WD5513 V2.

The WD5512B gives you the date-and-magnifier layout. The earlier 40 mm Submariner Date 116610LN is a useful size comparison, though shared diameter cannot settle case shape or fit.

Is a 40 mm Submariner homage suitable for a small wrist?

Diameter alone cannot settle fit. The WD5512B lists 48 mm lug-to-lug and 11.8 mm thickness; the Cronos L6015 lists 47.8 mm and 13.5 mm. Neither featured option is smaller than 40 mm.

Does the no-date Cronos L6015 use a no-date movement?

Cronos lists an NH35 with a no-date dial. It does not say whether it changed the calendar parts or the crown positions, so a no-date dial does not mean a no-date movement.

Is the Watchdives WD5513Q a quartz Submariner alternative?

Yes. The WD5513Q uses VH31 quartz and an aluminium bezel insert. Watchdives listed all its options as sold out on 5 October 2026, so it is not a featured buying choice here.

Are current Rolex Submariners 40 mm or 41 mm?
