Pagani Design PD-1644, blue dial and Oyster bracelet: Pagani Design PD-1644

Consider the blue PD-1644 if you want a working quartz chronograph in a listed 40 mm case. Pagani links this dial and bracelet option to its VK63 product. TMI documents the calibre's register functions.

The compromise. The VK63 counts up to 60 minutes and has a 24-hour time indicator. It cannot reproduce the Daytona's 12-hour elapsed-time counter. This version also adds a date aperture and changes the dial to blue.

Benyar BY-5169M, visual comparison: Benyar BY-5169M Chronograph

Keep the BY-5169M in view for its panda layout. A seller lists a 40 mm case and a PE903 quartz movement, but too little is known to recommend it as a working chronograph.

The compromise. The seller puts chronograph seconds on the 6 o'clock subdial, but the dial layout points to a central chronograph seconds hand. The seller also lists an alloy case and 3 bar water resistance.

In brief

Check what the subdials do before choosing a Daytona-style watch. The current Rolex counts 30 minutes and 12 hours. The VK63 in the Pagani PD-1644 counts 60 minutes and replaces the elapsed-hour counter with a 24-hour time indicator.

The PD-1644 below lists enough about its movement to compare what the chronograph does. The Benyar is a look-alike whose subdials are not clear, so do not buy it to time something until that is answered.

A 24-hour hand does not count elapsed hours

TMI assigns the VK63's 3 o'clock subdial to 24-hour time. Its 9 o'clock subdial counts elapsed minutes, up to 60. The hand at 6 shows running seconds, and the central hand counts chronograph seconds.

On the current calibre 4131 Daytona, the 3 o'clock counter records 30 minutes and the 9 o'clock counter records 12 hours. Running seconds remain at 6. A familiar three-register arrangement does not make those functions interchangeable.

Choose the movement and dial together

The current original is a self-winding mechanical chronograph with a stated 72-hour reserve. Pagani specifies a quartz VK63. The movement category and shorter timing range are purchase choices, even if you like the same tachymeter-bezel design.

This Pagani comparison uses the blue dial on the Oyster bracelet. The Rolex here has a white dial with contrasting counter rings. The PD-1644 also has a date window near 4:30, which the Daytona does not.

Forty millimetres leaves fit questions open

Rolex and Pagani both list 40 mm across. Rolex does not give lug to lug or thickness. Pagani lists 12 mm thick now and 11 mm in an older listing, so the case heights are not compared.

The Benyar's seller lists 40 mm across and 12 mm thick.

Against the original, spec by spec

A quartz chronograph with documented register functions

Compare the Rolex and PD-1644 for what their hands measure. Both have a nominal 40 mm case, but their timing ranges and dial functions differ.

Questions

Do the PD-1644 subdials work?

Yes, the maker specifies VK63 and TMI documents working registers. At 9 is a 60-minute chronograph counter, at 3 a 24-hour time indicator and at 6 running seconds. The central hand counts chronograph seconds. The 24-hour subdial is not a chronograph hour counter.

Can the PD-1644 time a two-hour event?

The VK63 chronograph times up to 60 minutes. It has no 12-hour counter like the Daytona's, so do not buy it expecting one.

Are all panda-dial alternatives mechanical?

No. The current Rolex uses a mechanical calibre 4131. Pagani specifies VK63 quartz, and the Benyar retailer names PE903 quartz. Dial colour and subdial layout do not tell you the movement type.

What do the Benyar's subdials count?

The seller says the hand at 6 counts chronograph seconds, but the dial layout points to a central chronograph seconds hand. Until the movement maker's manual or a demonstration settles it, do not rely on it for timing.

Sources and dates

We read the current Rolex and Pagani pages, TMI's VK63 technical guide and a Benyar retailer listing. Maker and seller specifications remain claims. Bewrist has not tested these chronographs or measured their cases.

The 4 October 2026 catalogue snapshot identifies the compared versions and preserves earlier disagreements. The 126500LN is our current original comparator; it does not establish the exact reference that inspired either candidate.

The 126500LN figures apply to the current white-dial steel reference checked here. They are not specifications for vintage Daytona generations. No current prices, stock, warranty comparison or ownership experience was checked.

The Pagani crystal observations and thickness remain conflicted. The Benyar register function remains unresolved. Those gaps limit the comparisons regardless of the watches' visual resemblance.
