What it means on the wrist

  • Winds itself. Wearing it winds the mainspring, and you can also wind it by turning the crown.

  • 21,600 beats an hour. The seconds hand moves in six small steps a second, which reads as a sweep.

  • 42 hours in reserve. Fully wound and taken off at 10 pm on Friday, it stops on Sunday afternoon.

  • Stops to set. Pull the crown out and the seconds hand stops, so you can set the time to the second. Older examples may not.

  • 20 slow to 40 fast a day. That is the maker's limit for the bare movement. At the fast end it gains about 20 minutes a month.
