How to recognise one

Seven marks make the look. The count says how many of the 15 homages keep each one.

  • Diamond at 12 on the bezel

A lumed diamond marks 12 on the bezel, beside a row of lumed minute dashes.

  • Bold numerals at 15, 30 and 45

Chunky bezel numerals at 15, 30 and 45, with lumed dashes in between.

  • Block and baton markers

Wide lumed blocks at 6 and 9 and tall batons at the other hours, all in aged cream lume.

  • Red minute ticks

A short red tick sits beside several of the hour markers on the minute track.

  • Date at 3

0 of 15 keep it, 14 not compared yet. A white date window with a black numeral sits at 3.

  • Sword hands

Broad lumed sword hands, with a thin white seconds hand.

  • Textured rubber strap

1 of 15 keep it, 12 not compared yet. A black rubber strap with a fine herringbone texture.

Each close-up covers about 12.5 mm of watch, using the listed case width and estimated photo edges.

Sources and unconfirmed details
Early circa-1953 full-size Fifty Fathoms exemplars relevant to the first-year style; auction records do not establish commercial-sale status or identify the first commercially sold configuration.

Historical first-generation style label; no single numeric reference is established. The 41 mm selection applies to two body-read early circa-1953 specimens and FHH model history. The auction listings do not prove either case was the first commercially sold configuration. Hairspring and Bulang disagree on diameter for the same serial 37XX specimen, so that conflict remains visible.

Source version Early circa-1953 full-size Fifty Fathoms exemplars relevant to the first-year style; auction records do not establish commercial-sale status or identify the first commercially sold configuration..

Phillips case 4381 and Chiswick case 5318 independently state 41 mm for early circa-1953 examples; FHH gives 41 mm for the 1953 original. These sources do not establish first-commercial-sale status. Hairspring and Bulang disagree at 41/40 mm for the same serial 37XX specimen, so that conflict remains separate.

Sources differ

Hairspring and Bulang describe the same serial 37XX watch but list 41 mm and 40 mm respectively. Neither source explains the difference. The separate 41 mm auction examples support an early circa-1953 41 mm selection without erasing this same-watch conflict.

Bulang W3356 serial 301xxx No-Rad Date specimen

Bulang & Sons W3356 listing identifies the No-Rad date watch and serial 301xxx, dating to the early 1960s. Blancpain historical press text identifies RPGA 1 as the calendar-based variant of BUND No Rad. This date-equipped Bulang specimen is consistent with that variant, but its listing does not state RPGA 1, so the code is not assigned to this specimen.

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms BUND No Rad, ref. RPG.1, Man’s Fine Life and Antiquorum evidence

Official Blancpain history identifies the mid-1960s German military RPG 1 as the BUND No Rad; Antiquorum lot 453 identifies exact ref. RPG.1, case 208020, circa 1965, and a 41 mm diameter. Man’s Fine Life describes the non-date Bundeswehr No-Rad variant and two owned examples, giving approx. 40 mm width and around 50 mm lug-to-lug. Keep the 40 mm claim as a real alternative observation and retain the selection rationale for the exact-reference 41 mm auction claim. The official 40.3 mm dimension is for the modern Tribute ref. 5008D and does not apply.
